A note from the Founder
From A Chicken Coop to 6 Million Households
Hello, I’m Kathy Ku, founder of SPOUTS of Water. In 2010, I witnessed the impact of dirty water on Ugandan communities and knew I had to act. And in 2011, SPOUTS was born, producing ceramic water filters from locally available materials. Starting small, our factory shared space with 200 chickens, taking weeks to create one filter.
Today, we’re Africa’s biggest ceramic filter producer, making 10,000 filters monthly. We’ve diversified our products, providing clean water, air, and energy to 6 million households by 2030. As a social enterprise, we reinvest profits to ensure long-term impact.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Below are some common questions our customers have asked about the Purifaaya™. If you do not find your answer(s) here, kindly reach out to us via info@spouts.org and pure@purifaaya.com or call 0771 614 847 /0702 439 116. Purifaaya™ is manufactured by SPOUTS of Water Limited in Uganda.
The Purifaaya™ is a ceramic water filter made from clay, this filter uses innovative filtration technology to filter out germs and other contaminants from the water to make it safe to drink without boiling. This filter has been used across the world.
Purifaaya works through the power of ceramic filtration.
The filter is made from clay, which contains tiny pores that effectively trap and remove impurities from water.
When water passes through the ceramic filter, the pores act as a barrier, preventing bacteria, germs, sediment, and other contaminants from passing through.
The result is clean and purified drinking water that is safe for drinking. Purifaaya’s natural filtration process does not require boiling.
Note: Ceramic water filters cannot remove salt or fluoride from water.
Clay and other ingredients are crushed into powder and then moulded into a pot shape. The raw pot then goes into a big kiln (oven), where the sawdust burns off at high temperatures leaving behind pores.
Purifaaya filters are made with great care. High-quality clay and sawdust are shaped and dried, then fired to create a strong and porous ceramic material. The filters are finished and thoroughly checked for quality before being packaged. This meticulous process guarantees that each Purifaaya filter provides reliable water filtration, ensuring clean and safe drinking water for all.
Proven to be 99.9% safe by tests conducted by the Ugandan Ministry of Water and Environment. The Purifaaya was also tested and approved by the Rwanda Standards board. It is as safe as boiling or bottled water. Check out the laboratory tests here.
Purifaaya works on all types of fresh water – lake, river, tap, well, rain, etc. Note: ceramic water filters cannot remove salt or fluoride from water.
The filtration rate ranges from 2.5 – 5 litres per hour. For the 20-litre filters (Purifaaya™ Regular), the range is from 2.5 – 3.5 litres per hour, the 30-litre Viva Purifaaya™ ranges from 2.5 – 4 litres per hour and then the 65-litre capacity (Purifaaya™ XL) ranges from 4 – 5 litres per hour.
20-litre (Regular Filter) and 75-litre filter (XL filter) and (Viva Purifaaya™) is a 30-litre capacity.
The filter unit is guaranteed for two years and we recommend that it be replaced at the end of that period.
The filter pot should be changed once the filtration rate becomes too slow (0.5 litres per hour).
We advise that filters be cleaned every 2 weeks. The plastic components should be washed with soap and water and allowed to dry under direct sun. The inside of the clay pot should be gently rubbed/scrubbed with a sponge or brush and rinsed with clean water. The dirtier the water source, the more often the filter should be cleaned.
Natural taste with a hint of clay “nsuwa” we all love.
The Purifaaya™ has been tested and certified by the Ugandan Ministry of Water and Environment, Rwanda Standards Boards, Uganda National Bureau of Standards, World Health Organization, Ministry of Water Nigeria. Every batch is also tested by Chemiphar (a Belgium-based lab in Kampala). The Purifaaya is also certified by the S mark in Rwanda.
